- Do choose a place that is conveniently located. How will you get home or to work if the repair shop is way across town? Choose a location that is convenient to your home or office. Can you walk to where you need to go while the reparation is taking place?
- Do choose a mechanic that is certified. Mechanics who work under the hood of your vehicle should have substantial training, experience, and certification. Ask the shop owner and you'll find out.
- Don't wait until the last minute to get your car serviced. Are you going on a cross-country journey in the morning but haven't had the vehicle serviced in a long time? This is a big no-no. Many shops can get you in rapidly, but in and out in a matter of minutes is unlikely.
- Don't ignore the flashing warning lights in your vehicle. Those lights mean something. It may be anything from tire pressure problems to needing an oil change. It could also mean that something terrible is happening inside your engine. The longer you drive it without service, the worse it's going to get. Pay attention to the flashing lights on your dashboard. They're there to help you.
- Don't forget to make certain your MPH gauge is operating. Not knowing how fast your vehicle is going is just asking for a speeding ticket. Pay attention to those cameras at various intersections, too. They're designed to photograph inattentive speeders and slap them with huge fines.
- Do have a way to remind yourself when oil changes are needed. A sticker in the windshield, a post-it note on your calendar, whatever works, don't forget to change your motor oil when necessary. Keeping motor oil clean, pure and at peak fullness will extend the longevity of the vehicle.
- Don't wait till the car breaks down to bring it in. Preventative maintenance performed on a regular basis will substantially cut down on hefty repair bills. Schedule preventative maintenance appointments according to your car's owner manual, which should be referred to on a regular basis.
- Do choose a repair shop with a good reputation. Ask your friends, neighbors, and coworkers who they use and why. A word-of-mouth reference is golden.
